The Fruitless Mulberry Tree
“The Instant Shade-Maker”
If you need shade and you need it now, the Fruitless Mulberry is your best friend. Known for its incredible growth rate and massive, deep-green leaves, this tree is a favorite in Riverside for turning a hot, sun-drenched backyard into a cool, leafy oasis in record time. Classic, lush, and expansive. This tree produces a thick, "umbrella-like" canopy that feels like a natural air conditioner for your yard. Because it’s the "fruitless" variety, you get all the beauty and shade of a Mulberry without any of the messy purple fruit staining your patio or shoes.
This is one of the toughest trees we carry. It is highly resistant to heat, poor soil, and even the toughest Riverside summers. While it’s very drought-tolerant once established, it is a thirsty grower during its first two years. During the summer, give it a deep, slow soak 2 times a week to support its rapid growth. It can reach a mature height and spread of 35–50 feet. It’s the perfect choice for large backyards or for blocking the sun on the west side of a two-story home.
It is practically bulletproof. It handles the "Inland Empire heat" better than almost any other shade tree and can grow up to 3 feet in a single year, giving you a functional shade canopy much faster than an Oak or a Maple.
The Fruitless Mulberry tree also qualifies for the Riverside Shade Tree Program.
